As we bid adieu to the Holiday Swiss, we look back at a tournament filled with memorable matches. We were thrilled to welcome Brian McDermott and John Rubillo to our ranks. Their participation added vibrancy to an already lively tournament. We also had the pleasure of several new faces joining for casual games, infusing fresh energy into our club. The results of the rated tournament are in, and you can check out the final standings on the USCF website and Chess Nut.
But there’s no rest for the chess enthusiasts at Media Chess Club! We’re already setting up the board for our next event: the “2024 Opening Moves Swiss.” This 4-round Swiss is an opportunity to start the new year with your best moves. Ready to join? Register here and let us know you’re in for one (or all!) of the four rounds (or show up a little before 7pm any Tuesday).
And for those who crave the rapid-fire excitement of Blitz chess, mark your calendars for Saturday, January 6th. Our Marketplace Blitz Tournament in Newtown Square is expected to be an intense battle of wits and speed complemented with light food, refreshments, and prizes. With many spots still open, now is a great time to sign up and secure your place. Remember, if we don’t hit at least 16 participants by January 3rd, we’ll refund the small entry fee. Let us know you are interested sooner than later to ensure we can move forward with the event.
Lastly, a heartfelt thank you to every member of our chess community. Since our inception in September, it’s your support and love for the game that have shaped this club into what it is today. I am immensely grateful and excited to share weekly chess matches with such a fantastic group.
As we close this chapter and look towards 2024, let’s keep the pawns advancing, the knights jumping, and our community thriving!

Holiday Swiss Standings
Key moment
With material mostly even, Ed Kline found himself in this position midway through one of his matches in the Holiday Swiss. Ed discovered a (!!) brilliant move which proved decisive.
Can you find the tactic as well?
Thank you to Cedar Creek Catering for providing the venue! In addition to supporting our club, they are active in the local community. Please keep them in mind for any events–they offer catering as well as a new ability to order takeout online!
