Last night marked the finale of our Turkey Swiss tournament, and what a feast of chess it was! Ed Kline emerged as the champion, carving out a stellar performance with 3 points, closely tailed by Aaron Biscoe, also at 3 points. Check out the final standings on the USCF website.
In a showcase of tactical finesse, our featured match between Craig Gerland and Faelan McDermott was a true spectacle. Faelan’s nimble moves in the Nimzo-Indian Defense created a highly tactical bout. Both played very well but Faelan found several truly impressive moves and ultimately locked in the upset. Relive this impressive game below.
We also welcomed new members Rob McFadden, Paul Klocke, Jayden Prosseda, and William Sadler, each bringing a fresh wave of talent to our club. Rob’s game against Denis Markov (only his second rated game) was a thriller, progressing to a very close end game with both players under one minute! Denis narrowly escaped, but I’m sure we will be hearing a lot more from these new talented players.
Moving forward, we’ll transition from weekly emails to a once-a-tournament recap. Weekly results will be published on Chessnut.club and can be accessed in real time. Stay tuned for a Chessnut.club invitation soon!
And there’s more: A Blitz Tournament is brewing for December or January! With limited spots available, watch out for upcoming details and registration instructions. Next on the chess calendar is the Holiday Swiss, starting December 5th through December 26th. Mark your calendars for this festive four-round tournament!
Upcoming Events
- Tuesday, December 5th – Round 1 of the Holiday Swiss
- December/January – Blitz Tournament (likely at Whole Foods Market in Newtown Square)
- Every Thursday – West Chester Chess Club meets at 7pm. If you are looking for more chess in your life, I’d recommend this club in the borough of West Chester. It has been around for 50 years and is a great place to play.

Key moment
After g4, black is ahead but only one move locks in the advantage. Ultimately, Faelan found it and continued with adroit play to consolidate the win.

Thank you to Cedar Creek Catering for providing the venue! In addition to supporting our club, they are active in the local community. Over Thanksgiving, they along with community partners provided meals for 500 people! You may have also seen them at the Christmas Parade offering a free taste of their delicious food. Keep them in mind for any events–they offer catering as well as a new ability to order takeout online!
