The Inaugural Swiss has officially wrapped up, and we have a clear champion – Tariq Yue! He didn’t just win; he swept the field with a perfect 5 out of 5 matches. Tariq, we tip our hats to your impeccable play. We were also thrilled to have two new members: Faelan McDermott and Ilya Dmitriev. A warm Media Chess Club welcome to you both!
The big news of the evening was the fantastic chess demonstration by International Master Tom Bartell. Tom took us on a journey to 1929, as he analyzed the match between Jose Raul Capablanca and Karel Treybal. He wove together lessons on space advantages, prophylactic attacks, and the concept of bad pieces – in this case, black’s troublesome light squared bishop which had a cascading impact on other pieces. As Tom noted, Tarrasch once wisely said, “If one piece is badly placed, your whole game is bad.” Tom’s insights left us buzzing with inspiration to up our chess game. Check out the full game and a few key positions below.
And here’s a peek into next week: Tony Durkin is coming through with a treat for all of us – a pizza night at the club! That’s right, free pizza and soda to fuel our chess battles. Mark your calendars and come hungry!
That’s a wrap for this week’s recap. Hope to see you all next Tuesday for more chess adventures and, of course, delicious pizza.
