Pizza and Pawns: A Delicious Round One of the Scary Swiss!

Cedar Creek Pizza

Another stellar Tuesday night unfolded at the Media Chess Club, and if you missed out, here’s a quick rundown of the evening’s highlights!

First, hats off to Tony Durkin, our resident chess enthusiast and pizza provider, for treating us to a scrumptious pizza night! And let’s not forget where that delightful pie came from – shout out to Cedar Creek Catering. They not only served us this mouthwatering treat but also graciously offer their space for our meetings. If that pizza left a mark on your taste buds, remember to show some love and drop them a review on Google!

Now, onto the serious stuff: chess! Last night marked the kick-off of our Scary Swiss, setting the stage for three more rounds of intense gameplay. And if you haven’t joined yet, fret not – there’s always room mid-swiss!

A special spotlight on the game between the masterful Drew Fleming and newcomer Max Graham. It was a nail-biter that went 60 moves and remained tight most of the way. Though Drew ultimately secured the win, Max’s resilience and innovation throughout the game provided a thrilling spectacle. For those who missed it or want to relive the excitement, the game has been provided below.

Finally, we were excited to greet our newest members: David Markman, Armen Dervishian, Julius Hernadi, Max Graham, Carl Griffin, Jim Larsen, Michael Medford, and Craig Gerland. We’re thrilled to have you on board!

That’s a wrap for this week’s recap. Hope to see you all next Tuesday for more chess adventures.

Upcoming Events

  • Tuesday, October 17th – Round 2 of the Scary Swiss
  • Mid to Late November – Blitz Tournament. We will follow up with additional details in the coming weeks
  • Every Thursday – West Chester Chess Club meets at 7pm. If you are looking for more chess in your life, I’d recommend this club in the borough of West Chester. It has been around for 50 years and is a great place to play.

Scary Swiss Standings

Key moment

40 moves in and the engine has the game dead even; however, there is only one move that works for black. The next best is +4.

What would you play next?

Thank you to Cedar Creek Catering for providing the venue! Check them out at the Media Farmers Market.
